Mit dem Walter Reed army Medical Center führt eines der größten Krankenhäuser des US-Militärs ein umfangreiches RFID-System zum Verwaltung seiner Instrumente und Geräte ein. Im RFIDjournal heißt es hierzu:

The hospital plans to utilize the system to track 4,000 pieces of equipment, according to Awarepoint, a San Diego provider of RTLS technology designed for tracking assets in health-care facilities.

Die Vorteile dieses neue Technologie liegen auf der Hand: Nicht nur, dass die Geräte schneller zu lokalisieren sind, auch die Termine für regelmäßige Wartungen werden automatisch angezeigt.

Partner des Medical Centers ist das Unternehmen Awarepoint und zunächst soll die Partnerschaft über vier Jahre andauern. Zur Technik lesen wir weiter:

To locate assets, the company employs active RFID tags operating at 2.48 GHz. The tags transmit their unique IDs over the 802.15.4 (ZigBee) communications protocol, to small receivers (access points) that plug directly into standard 120V AC wall outlets.

Das System basiert desweiteren darauf, dass die jeweiligen Daten über ein Wi-Fi-Netz angezeigt werden:

With Wi-Fi systems, [Awarepoint's CEO, Jason Howe] notes, the installation of access points-in addition to those already installed in a Wi-Fi-powered facility-is required to provide the level of location accuracy generally desired by end users. Skilled labor must install the Wi-Fi access points, he says, and the wiring and mounting involved generate dust, resulting in the suspension of normal operations in the room in which the devices are being installed.
